Txt2Cmo application

This FREE application is a handy companion to Crossword Maestro and Htmlcm. Like Htmlcm, using this application can save the time and effort involved in entering web page or printed crosswords into Crossword Maestro. It is especially useful when the following problem is encountered by Htmlcm when it cannot convert the web page html or text file to Crossword Maestro (.CMO) file format. In addition to the reasons stated in the message box, Htmlcm cannot handle barred crosswords of the Mephisto and Listener variety. So in the case of barred crosswords, create the grid in Crossword Maestro and simply insert the clues with Txt2Cmo (see below).

Txt2Cmo has two major capabilities and several minor ones. It takes clues from a clues.txt file and with one button-click either inserts them into an unclued Crossword Maestro .CMO file or creates a clues.htm file suitable for use by Htmlcm. The clues.txt file is a simple Notepad file of the Across and Down clues obtained by cut-and-paste from web page or scanned and OCR'd from print page. If Htmlcm succeeds with the clues.htm file there is not much more to be done. But if not, use the impressive grid creation capabilities of Crossword Maestro, save unclued to grid.cmo, and use Txt2Cmo to insert the clues. The software has four viewer buttons that allow easy click browsing of .CMO files, .CMO file solutions, .CMO file clues and full-view of clues.txt files.

The format of the clues.txt file is shown highlighted in the Notepad window below.

Click the button to insert the clues from the clues.txt file into an unclued grid.cmo file.

clues.txt-->Txt2Cmo-->grid.cmo-->Crossword Maestro

Click the button to create a clues.htm file from the clues.txt file and run the Htmlcm program to create the grid.cmo file.

clues.txt-->Txt2Cmo-->clues.htm-->Htmlcm-->grid.cmo-->Crossword Maestro

Txt2Cmo also has four (4) one-click view buttons:

view grid.cmo , view grid.cmo solution , view clues.txt  and view cmo_clues.txt .

To create a clues.txt file from web page or printed crossword clues:

copy crossword clues-->clipboard-->paste into Notepad-->edit and save as clues.txt

Web page crosswords are best handled by going to print view and selecting just the clues from the line before the word Across to a line or two past the last Down clue. Copy to clipboard.

Open up a Notepad window and paste in. A few keystrokes (about 5) are usually required to edit to the correct format shown. Save as clues.txt.

Click the button to create a sample clues.txt file.

The current version of this product is 1.2 (March 2007). Users of earlier versions can upgrade simply by downloading and installing again.
